The Commercial Design Award of Excellence is awarded for the restoration of the Golden State Mutual Life Insurance Building in Los Angeles, California. At its completion, both the building and its architect, Paul Revere Williams, were central to the African-American community during the previous century and influenced the history of Southern California. For much of the 20th century Golden State Mutual Life Insurance was the largest black-owned insurance company in the western United States and the first in the region to write insurance policies to all people regardless of color. The company was a pillar of the African-American community, providing hundreds of African-Americans and other minorities stable, middle-class employment, and was front and center in the drive for civil rights as the site of numerous voter drives and community organization efforts, including a visit by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The interiors have been restored to match the original 1949 design, and the building now serves the community as a center of the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center (“SCLARC”) campus. The property is listed on the National Register and as a Historic Cultural Monument in the City of Los Angeles.

Silvertop, John Lautner’s first concrete shell construction, represents an important turning point in the evolution of postwar architecture in Los Angeles and internationally; away from asceticism and towards an organic expression of form, using sophisticated new concrete engineering technologies and haptic interior materials. It is one of the most technically and structurally innovative houses in the world.

SurveyLA is a one of its kind endeavor, diving deep into the history of the built environment in Los Angeles and how it has shaped the city and region. "L.A. Modernism, 1919-1980" explores the maturation of the Modernist style across Los Angeles and how this style perhaps more than any other came to define our conceptions of the City of Angels. Through intense survey work, "L.A. Modernism" tracks the development of Prewar styles, Postwar styles, and architectural responses to both, featuring works from prolific architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Irving Gill, Richard Neutra, and many others. This extraordinary compendium is easily accessible through the Department of City Planning, and is written on a level that all enthusiats of modern architecture can understand and enjoy.

In Spring 2013, the Los Angeles Conservancy launched a broad-based initiative, Curating the City: Modern Architecture in L.A., 1940-1990. Part of the Getty’s Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in L.A., the initiative curated fifty years of Modern architecture through tours, panel discussions, and a permanent online resource.

As part of this initiative, and along with the concurrent redevelopment of its website, the Conservancy created a dedicated section (microsite) devoted to Modern architecture. At the heart of the microsite is a database and interactive map of more than 300 historic Modern places throughout Los Angeles County. The microsite serves as a central resource for documenting, exploring, and preserving Modern architecture in Los Angeles. Both the database/map and additional content reflect new scholarship, presented to the public in an engaging way using innovative technology.
